With mascara sales hitting over $300 million, it’s obvious that American women crave long, dark, thick lashes. And now there is an easy way to get them. For those of us lash obsessed, mascara junkies, there is a new miracle cure called eyelash conditioners. In fact, they are synthetic growth hormones with names like blinc, lavish lashes, and the most famous Revitalash. These products’ miracle lash stimulating ingredient is a synthetic hormone like chemical called prostaglandins. Hormones, either natural or synthetic, are designed to signal body cells to tell them what to do, whether it be to contract muscles or to grow hair. Prostaglandins work on an inflammatory response, some turn things on and others switch them off.
Scientists stumbled upon prostaglandins’ hair thickening properties by accident while researching common glaucoma medications. Over the last decade ophthalmologists found the side effects to include most notably the increased number, length, thickness, curvature and pigmentation of lash hairs. Doctors also observed a darkening of eyelid, lash and in some cases iris pigment. While the lids and lashes return to their original color after drug use stops, changes in light colored irises were common and permanent. So while they are marvelous products they must be used with care and judiciously. A tiny line should be painted across the lid rim (it should be noted that glaucoma drops go directly inside the eye itself). If any of the product gets in your eye it may sting and should be rinsed immediately with cool water.
The most popular of these OTC eyelash enhancers are Revitalash and Jan Marini Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner. Not called ‘growth’ products, for FDA reasons, these products do in fact work and are a miracle for those of us who suffer from baby lash syndrome. I have been using Revitalash for 6 months and my lashes are noticeably longer and thicker. Combined with a coat of my favorite drug store mascara, Cover Girl Lashblast, http://www.covergirl.com/products/collections/blast/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CoverGirl%2bBlast%2bBranded&utm_term=CoverGirl%20lash%20blast&v=1&gclid=CO2Dpor2r6MCFRplgwodLUro4Qand my lashes transform from frumpy to fabulous in a flash!
