Single Mom’s and Health Concerns

UnknownEveryone wants to stay healthy and fit and most women are keen to foster continuing good health as they mature. Among the illnesses and conditions that particularly concern single mom’s today are heart disease, breast cancer, depression, osteoporosis and autoimmune diseases. Prevention of these serious issues means adopting a healthy lifestyle, which can significantly reduce the risks associated with them.

As an example, giving up smoking has a major impact on general health as continuing with the habit increases the risk of contracting heart disease, cancers and chronic lower respiratory diseases, among many other health issues. Eating a healthy diet is also important, so opt for fruits, high-fiber foods, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean meats and fish, which are all sources of healthy protein. Aim to limit alcohol intake and avoid foods that are high in sodium, cholesterol and saturated fat.

Regular exercise

A healthy diet and regular exercise contribute towards maintaining a healthy body weight; in addition, exercise helps lower the risk of certain major diseases. From ballroom dancing to brisk walking, there is a wide range of activities from which to choose, other than arduous sports pursuits. Regular physical activity is thought to lower the risk of developing various types of cancers and any physical and mental exercise may count towards warding off Alzheimer’s disease.

Managing stress

In today’s busy world many single moms are caught up in work and family matters to the extent that they skip relaxation time. This can allow stress hormones to overtake them and create significant health problems. Long-term unrelieved stress can cause depression, menstrual disorders, overeating and a variety of skin disorders. Single moms who eat sensibly, take regular exercise and remember to take time out for themselves are able to combat such problems. Some women favor quiet activities, such as meditation, others combine the discipline of daily routines of yoga or Pilates, or set up regular phone dates with a good friend as a way of getting rid of pent-up energy or blowing off steam.

Managing chronic conditions

People with a high cholesterol level, with hypertension (also known as high blood pressure), or depression, should always follow the treatment recommended by their healthcare practitioner. There are very effective medications available, which are designed to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels and many people with depression buy Wellbutrin, an antidepressant often recommended by doctors.

Autoimmune disorders

Autoimmune disorders are characterized by alterations to tissues when the immune system attacks the body. They include more than 80 serious chronic illnesses including type 1 diabetes. Women with diabetes can get help to keep their blood sugar under control by using medicines and sometimes insulin shots.

Breast cancer

Of all the cancers, breast cancer is the most common among women, so regular screening and self-examination are important for early detection. Treatments for breast cancer are now very sophisticated and effective, in fact more women die from lung cancer than breast cancer.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a serious medical condition in which the bones become fragile and brittle as a result of the loss of tissue, typically due to hormonal changes or deficiency of Vitamin D or calcium. Yet again, eating a balanced diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals and taking regular exercise to build strong bones will help women to build up their body to provide as effective a defense as possible.

Single Moms: Uncommon Tips to Avoid Getting the Flu

teaEveryone seems to be catching the flu this season and avoiding it has become a top priority.  Seniors, new moms, and kids are at an especially high risk for catching the dreaded flu.  So what can you do?

Robert and Annette Mahoney, health care experts associated with FirstLight HomeCare, specialize in providing in-home care for seniors, new moms, and people who cannot currently take care of themselves.   They understand that no one has time to get sick so they have provided 5 uncommon tips to aid in flu prevention.

1. A Spoonful of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil smells like a tropical oasis, but it also packs properties that increase your immune defense.  The lauric acid in it converts to monolaurin, fighting overtime to defend your body.  You can easily stir a spoonful of coconut oil into your regular coffee or tea!

2. Drink Warm Tea

Tea can boost immunity and aid in flu and cold prevention.  According to a Harvard study, drinking green or black tea daily, several times a day, can make you 10 times less likely to catch the flu.  Tea can also help wash viruses from your throat and once the germs are in your stomach, they can’t survive.

3. Experiment with Garlic

Garlic contains allicin which has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties.  Just make sure the garlic is raw.  You can even add garlic at the end of cooking to tap its full medicinal power.

4. Don’t Just Wash, Use Lotion

Washing your hands is essential to keeping germs at bay, but it is also important to regularly hydrate your skin with lotion.  When your skin cracks, germs can become trapped in them, increasing your chances of getting the flu.  Try an antibacterial or hand soap with lotion instead!

5. Try Lemon

Lemons are not only packed with vitamin C, which is known to support the body’s natural defenses, but it can also help build resistance to the flu.  Dr. Oz suggests adding lemon juice to your tea or make lemonade to build resistance or speed up healing if you do succumb to the flu.

I hope you find these flu prevention tips helpful!  Good luck!

sneeze

Single Moms: Reduce Allergies Year Round

sneezeThere may be a lack of pollen in the air during the winter season, but that doesn’t mean that allergies are gone for good.  Allergies can still affect you and your kids because of the pets, dust mites, mold, and more that can be found inside your home.  So what can you do to help eliminate pesky allergies?

Robin Wilson, CEO of Robin Wilson Home and ambassador to The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, has created a hypoallergenic bedding line at Bed Bath and Beyond.  She offers these tips:

- Use synthetic pillows over feathered ones as well as anti-allergen or hypoallergenic pillow cases and covers. Wash your pillowcases once a week, your pillow protector at least once a month, and wash your pillow at least twice a year. Replace pillows every three years.

- Do not use vinyl shower curtains because they hold mold more easily.  Use a nylon curtain instead (it’s also less expensive).

- Use non-VOC paints in bedrooms, which won’t off gas, leave a paint odor, and stir up asthma or allergies.

- Avoid wall-to-wall carpeting.  Tile and hardwood floors are a better choice, but must be cleaned on a regular basis to eliminate dirt and dust.  It is best to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.

- Watch for mold in the dishwasher and refrigerator pan, which can build up quickly.

- A rising trend is the use of eco-friendly cabinetry because it has no formaldehyde adhesives and is made with low VOC stains.  Also, consider frameless cabinets that won’t collect as much dust.

- Use slip covers on sofas and chairs, which can be washed regularly to eliminate dirt and dust.

- Keep pets out of bedrooms and don’t let them on the bed.  Pets should be bathed often to reduce dander.

I hope you find these tips helpful in making your home cleaner and safer.  Taking advantage of these tips will reduce allergies and asthma attacks throughout the year.

How to Use your Hormones to Help you Lose Weight

insight-diabetic-foot-care1Single mom’s understanding your hormones, how they are activated and what you can do to keep them under control can be the difference between living up to that age old weight reduction New Year’s resolution with success or holding on to those  extra five for another season. There are a zillion diet plans, spas and great resorts like the Biggest Loser Resorts, but understanding your body and how it metabolizes your food intake is essential in winning your war on weight gain.

Cortisol and Serotonin

When a bad day at the office has you reaching for a greasy, salty, cheesy treat it could be a result of your adrenal glands releasing the stress hormone cortisol. The response is meant to give you a burst of energy for fight or flight and some evidence indicates cortisol could be the reason you’re accumulating fat in your belly. Serotonin on the other hand calms you down and suppresses your appetite. That’s why your appetite wanes after a good workout. You can also accomplish the same result loading up on folate rich lentils, asparagus and spinach. Your brain uses the vitamin B in these foods to make serotonin. My favorite trick is to add a handful of spinach to my morning scramble.

Irisin

Irisin is a recently discovered hormone that is produced in our muscle tissue and released during exercise helps convert white fat (the kind that makes us retain weight) into brown fat, the kind that burns calories. Exercise is the key. In a recent study, irisin levels doubled after a 10 week training program. Another interesting way to increase irisin is to lower your thermostat. People who spent two hours in a 64 degree room and periodically dipped their feet in ice water had their brown fat burning 15 times more calories. I always believed that my muscles were working overtime when my body is chilled..now I know for a fact it’s true!

Insulin

Super-sizing your intake of carb heavy meals or super sugary drinks will spike your insulin which pulls the extra glucose from your bloodstream. Over do it and the insulin can cause the extra calories to be stored as fat (the white kind). The extra weight in turn can lead to insulin resistance which in turn leads to more fat storage and ultimately diabetes. Cutting out sugary sodas and amping up your intake of whole grains and fiber which slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream will even out the insulin response. Spacing out your meals and snacks so you eat smaller portions more frequently is a great way to maintain consistent levels of glucose and insulin

Hidden Hormones

Single Mom’s did you know that hormones aren’t just produced by our bodies? As reported in the December edition of Women’s Health Magazine, you will find them in the most surprising places.

1. Beauty Products – Many cosmetics, shampoos and household cleaning products contain chemicals called phthalates to help scents last. Exposure to high levels of this ingredient has been linked to being overweight.

2. Canned foods – Many cans are lined with an estrogen-like chemical called bisphenol A (BPA). High acid foods like tomatoes can cause the chemical to leach into the contents. Look for BPA-free cans or alternative packaging.

3. Nonstick cookware – Girls born to women with the highest levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during pregnancy were three times as likely to be overweight than those whose moms had the lowest levels. Use cast iron or stainless steel pans instead.

Single Moms: The Best Strategy for Healthy Holidays

It’s that time of year… holiday season!  It’s cold outside and we want to bundle up next to the fireplace instead of going for a jog!  And we would much rather indulge in scrumptious holiday treats than count calories!  But once the holidays are over, we wonder what we were thinking and end up making it a resolution to work off that holiday bulge.  We deserve to celebrate, but we also need to not overdo it!  So here are a few tips on how to stay healthy during this celebratory season and a host of healthy holiday recipes.

1. Have a snack before going to a party!

There are a lot of deliciously tempting treats at holiday parties, which is why it is a great idea to have a healthy snack before you leave the house like an apple or celery sticks slathered with peanut butter.  You’ll be less likely to grab that gingerbread cookie or slice of pie if your belly is already satisfied.

2. Bring a healthy dish to the party!

Most people bring decadent dishes to parties, but where are all the greens?  Bring a leafy salad or a vegetable dish instead.  I’m sure others will be grateful for your healthy addition as well.

3. Fill your plate with healthy foods first!

Start your meal with the healthy options first.  Grab some salad, vegetables, and some lean turkey or chicken.  You’ll be able to fill up on the healthy options before allowing yourself to stuff your face with fattening foods like creamed corn or fried latkes.

4. Go in with a healthy mind-set!

Many holiday foods only come around once a year, so we feel the need to eat as much as we can before they disappear.  Sadly, this often leads to regret.  So don’t use the holidays as an excuse to eat poorly!  Go to a party with a healthy mindset.  Sure, you can enjoy some treats, but do so in moderation and you’ll be much happier in the long-run.  Instead of focusing on food, remind yourself what this celebration is all about.  Focus on friends and family and simply enjoy the good times!

5. Be wary of what you’re drinking!

There are a lot of yummy beverages to sip during the holiday season, but they are usually packed with fat and sugar.  One cup of eggnog, for example, contains about 350 calories!  Even Starbucks’ Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino is a whopping 420 calories!  If you can’t resist, at least opt for a lighter version with skim or soy milk or make your own healthier version at home.

6. Stay active!

It may be colder and harder to motivate yourself to hit the gym this season, but you’ll feel so much better if you do.  Keep moving whenever you can!  I like to take a long walk with my daughters to enjoy all of the beautiful lights in the neighborhood.  Or if you’re at a party with children, play ball or run around with them to burn a few extra calories!  Make it fun!

This is a time for celebrating but beware of overindulging yourself to the point of regret.  Enjoy this holiday season by staying healthy!  You’ll feel better when you have reached the new year and your jeans still fit (or maybe feel a little looser).  Cheers to a happy and healthy holiday season!

eggplant-harvest

Single Moms: The Benefits of Eating Seasonably

Summer has been officially over for a couple of weeks now, and you’ve probably noticed the diminishing stacks of strawberries, blueberries, and nice avocados. Instead of mourning the loss of the summer produce, why not see what Fall has to offer?

Eating seasonably offers a few benefits– the first, which I think is most important for single moms to know about, is the fact that produce that is being grown and harvested nearby (rather than being imported off-season from 3000 miles away), is that it’s cheaper! Not only is it cheaper, but if you’re buying organic and local, you’re also helping your immediate economy.

Besides the money aspect, eating seasonably has health benefits as well. When you’re eating food that has been grown virtually in your own backyard during its peak harvest, the nutrient content of the food is much greater than if it had been shipped in from somewhere else– in which case, most likely having been injected with unhealthy preservative chemicals or annihilated with pesticides.

Also, fruits and vegetables that aren’t harvested locally or in their natural habitat are usually harvested too early, then are refrigerated, not leaving them time to ripen and develop fully. This not only hurts the health value, but also the taste value! Local, seasonal food is much healthier, and far tastier!

If I haven’t convinced you to get to your local farmer’s market yet, I don’t know what will! Seasonal food is the real deal. Now go eat some parsnips and persimmons!

These days, everyone knows the dangers of the toxins that have, in the past, made up almost all of our material goods. Heart Health for Single Moms

Rosie O’Donnell’s brush with death was undoubtedly a scary wake up call for women all over the county, but for me the scare hit much closer to home. Six days ago one of my closest friends also suffered a heart attack. Unlike Rosie, who is a self proclaimed junk food junkie, my friend is a slender, petite, no nonsense stay at home mom. I was shocked by her news, to say the least. Unfortunately heart disease is the number one killer amongst women, and single moms are no exception.  There are many resources to help prevent heart issues from happening. Below are 5 healthy heart things you should know.

WOMEN’S SYMPTOMS ARE SUBTLE

Although chest pain can be a symptom of a heart attack for a woman, often the signs can be more subtle. Single moms may also experience what are called “atypical” symptoms, including:

  • Back, jaw, lower chest, or upper belly pain or discomfort
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness

CALL 911

Many single moms will have a set of symptoms up to a month before the actual heart attack. Some women have cold flushes or break out in a sweat, a clammy sweat. Shortness of breath is a common symptom. Some women have stabbing pain in their back. Often too busy with the family or the children they’ll ignore their symptoms or don’t think much of it. They certainly don’t think it could be a heart attack. Physicians warn not to ignore any of these signs. If you suspect you are having a heart attack take aspirin and call 911,  even if you are wrong, any delay and you are right can cause more damage.

HEART DISEASE RISK FACTORS

There are five traditional risk factors which all play an equal role, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar or diabetes, smoking and family history of early heart disease. Excess weight can contribute to heart risk factors particularly in a woman’s mid-section, this is my friends issue, she is slim except for her the small amount of weight she carried in her belly. According to the University of Michigan scientists belly fat appears to boost inflammation and it is linked to worse atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries which makes heart attacks more likely. Stress is also a key factor because it can lead to increased chemicals and hormones in the blood stream, which raise blood pressure and heart rate. Again this played a part in my friends issue.

HEART DISEASE PREVENTION

To lower stress and rid your body of belly fat single moms are encouraged to exercise at least 30 minutes, a day 3 to 5 days a week, at a vigorous intensity. Fast paced walking or running for one minute followed by two minutes of moderate walking is ideal. A thirty minute bike ride is another great way to exercise. Take your kids to the park and play with them, that doesn’t mean sitting on the bench gossiping with the other moms, that means pushing the swing, chasing them around the park, play hopscotch or jump rope! Even moderate to intense housework, such as vacuuming or scrubbing a floor, can be considered a workout. And to relieve stress try yoga or meditation. Nothing is more important than your health, you are the woman your children depend on…be there for them!
