lose weight with smaller bites

In a European study, a group of people were given chocolate custard in spoonfuls of different sizes, they ate a lot less overall when their bites were smaller. People feel full simply by the sensory exposure-the texture, aroma and taste of the meal. Eating smaller bites, increases the sensory pleasure while eating less food overall. Hence, my one bite of dessert theory holds true. But you must be steadfast in satisfying your sweet tooth with a single spoon. Cut your meat into smaller mouthfuls and chew completely to really enjoy the flavor. Put your ice cream into a mug instead of a bowl, you will take less and eat it with a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon to satisfy more with less. Sip your drink instead of gulping it down from a straw.

That’s right milk helps burn up the LB’s. Women who drank skim milk after working out lost 3.5 pounds of fat in 12 weeks. The ladies who drank sports thirsters ended up gaining weight. What??!!!! That’s right, sports drinks are loaded with sugar while milk is pure white fat burning bliss. Milk’s protein improves your bodies ability to burn calories and build muscle. It’s also key for building strong bones and teeth which will help fight off on-set osteoporosis. Aim for three (8-ounce) glasses a day to get 100 percent of your calcium needs met and 75 percent of your vitamin D and a host of other essential nutrients from high quality protein to potassium, phosphorus, vitamin A and vitamin B12.

A glass of cabernet a day will keep the doctor away.

Researchers have blessed us with a very grown up way to get our daily antioxidants. Cabernet Sauvignon followed by petite syrah and pinot noir have the highest concentration of flavonids (an important antiox must), which have been shown to help prevent some cancers and heart disease, while also reducing inflammations caused by arthritis. Revesterol another antiox fav found in red wine grape skins might inhibit tumor development in some cancers as well as help treat Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases. Another study found that women who drink a glass or two of wine daily have 5 to 8 percent denser bones, preventing injuries.

Of course, no one is promoting excessive drinking which leads to weight gain, addiction, and a rise in LDL cholesterol.

Moderation is the key. One to two four ounce glasses is the suggested daily. Fun is the prescription. I have found the best place to test out your new found wine drinking freedom. My friends, the Roosters, are having their annual Food and Wine celebration May 22 and 23 at Newport Beach Fairmont Hotel. Over 20 wineries will feature their finest bottles and 18 of Orange County’s top chefs will be preparing a 5-course meal. For more information go to http://www.roostersfoundation.org

The Roosters is a charity and social organization in the greater Orange County area of Southern California. Each year they raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for disadvantaged children. This year they will feed 5,000 families with needy and at-risk children representing 40,000 people living below the poverty line in Orange County.

Lychee Nuts are not truly a nut but rather a fruit that is indigenous to China and Vietnam. They are about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in size, oval shaped, red and bumpy on the outside with white flesh and a big seed on the inside. You crack the skin open and eat the sweet juicy white part inside. The fruit is packed with Vitamin C and potassium, low in cholesterol and sodium, high in copper and only 7 calories. In a recent study researchers found that the Lychee nut extract may help you lose weight. People were given daily lychee supplements for 10 weeks and reduced belly fat by 15 percent. This is because they found that lychee increases levels of adiponectin, a hormone that fires up fat burning. How easy is that!

Lychee also contains some impressive anti-breast cancer properties. A study published in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology stated that lychee nuts slow the formation and progression of breast cancer through apoptosis, a type of cell death.

Lychee’s are an all around healthy little package dressed in red.

Get ready to bring on the happy. April can be a touch and go kind of month when the long awaited spring sunshine is frequently mixed with a bout of residual wintery blusters. These ugly weather twisters affect our brains making us as gloomy as the outdoors. Fortunately, we can boost our moods with a variety of foods filled with natural happy inducing hormones. My favorite is chocolate. One small square of dark chocolate contains a pleasure promoting neurotransmitter called phenylethylamine, which stimulates a rush of endorphins, the same compound released during exercise. Another brain booster is fish like Salmon and tuna. Research has shown that people who eat fish rich in Omega 3 fatty acids are more likely to be upbeat and agreeable. Walnuts and Almonds are another great source of Omega 3’s.

Hurray for healthy carbs

Finally! The diet guru’s agree carbohydrates are necessary in the battle to lose weight. In fact, it has been shown that it is harder to drop pounds without eating carbs, than it is by including them in your daily dining. According to a study from the University of South Carolina School of Public Health, a diet comprised of 50% to 60% carbohydrates lowers the risk of being overweight and lowers body mass index (BMI).

This doesn’t mean you can load up on cookies and pastries. Nutrient dense foods rule. Fruit, veggies, and whole grains are the carb superstars. Potatoes – remember when they were evil diet busters-not anymore, slightly under ripe banana’s – love them! and oatmeal – so warm in your belly. All these foods are rich in resistant starch which acts like a fiber, so it helps you feel full. Research shows that resistant starch can also help you lose abdominal fat and evens out blood sugar levels.

A few other good carb choices include beans, pasta, strawberries, beets, and artichoke hearts.

Pink grapefruit's amazing health benefits

Pink Grapefruit is not just a beautiful sweet treat, it also has incredible healing powers. Grapefruits contain a rich phytonutrient called liminoids. These magical limonoids found in grapefruit have amazing stamina, studies show that they stay in our bodies up to 6 hours. That’s almost twice as long as similar phytonutrients found in green tea and chocolate. Bottom line, grapefruits contain some long lasting kickass free radical fighters. The limonoids primarily work to inhibit tumor formation which in turn fights cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon. In a recent research study people who incorporated red grapefruit into their daily diet lowered LDL cholesterol by 15.5% and reduced triglycerides by 17.2% in just 30 days. And if that weren’t enough, these red beauties may also help prevent weight gain by lowering insulin levels. Long live the Ruby’s! We like these kind of feisty fighters!

get your daily dose

The latest research out of Japan suggests that a daily intake of vinegar will boost your body’s ability to burn fat. Nice! The researchers fed two groups of mice a high-fat diet, supplementing one group with a daily dose of the main chemical in vinegar. The group that consumed the acetic acid developed less body fat than the ones that didn’t have any. In a follow-up study with human subjects, three teaspoons of vinegar diluted in two cups of water daily experienced similar results after 12 weeks. Go ahead, toss your salad with vinegar instead of those creamy dressings and sprinkle a healthy dose of it onto your steamed veggies. Than burn baby burn!

Respectin' the cocoa bean

I suspect we all would have had a more joyful childhood had “eat all your Chocolate!!” been our mother’s, clean your plate battle cry instead of “eat all your veggies”. Can you imagine a world where if you didn’t eat all your chocolate you wouldn’t get carrot sticks for dessert. Well now you can!

Researchers have found that eating a small dark chocolate bar every day (no more than 3.5 ounces) will keep your heart and cardio system in tip top shape. In fact, a recent study found that individuals who have had a heart attack and eat chocolate had a 44% greater ten year survival rate than those patients who did NOT eat chocolate.

If you think about it, it makes total sense! Chocolate is made from plants which means it contains a lot of the same vitamins and minerals of dark vegetables. Chocolate is a complex nutrient with over 300 compounds and chemicals in every bite. High in flavonoids and antioxidants cocoa contains 8 times the number found in strawberries, green tea or red wine (sorry Alchy’s). Antioxidants fight aging by attacking free radicals that have been linked to heart disease, cancer and wrinkles. Flavonoids relax blood pressure through the production of nitric oxide and balance hormones in the body. Interestingly, research also shows that washing your chocolate down with a glass of milk could prevent the antioxidants from being absorbed into your system. In other words be a purest.

Phew, chocolate is not so naughty after all. Enjoy!

Drinking a cup of AM java before you workout is a "must do"!

All that hoopla about coffee and tea being bad for you…not true. Tea, coffee and chocolate, for that matter, contain caffeine, a powerful stimulant. Besides being a tastey morning necessity caffeine has been shown to positively revv up your morning workouts. How? It’s simple.

Caffeine fuels your central nervous system by blocking adenosine, a neurotransmitter that usually calms your body. The adrenal glands heat up and release adrenaline, your heart rate increases, pupils dilate, muscles tighten up and glucose, the energy your body needs to exercise is released into your blood stream.

Caffeine increases dopamine, the pleasure part of your brain and research suggests that caffeine can improve endurance performance by increasing the use of fat as an energy source. So you can burn more calories and get a more powerful and enjoyable workout.

One word of caution, caffeine lives in your system for 6 hours after consumption. So it’s most effective for a morning workout person. If you are an after work exerciser you might want to think about the caffeine after affect and sleep.

Anyone for a Latte?!

Try my favorite coffee Boresha. Click on the “free sample” tab at the top of the page my compliments.
