I suspect we all would have had a more joyful childhood had “eat all your Chocolate!!” been our mother’s, clean your plate battle cry instead of “eat all your veggies”. Can you imagine a world where if you didn’t eat all your chocolate you wouldn’t get carrot sticks for dessert. Well now you can!
Researchers have found that eating a small dark chocolate bar every day (no more than 3.5 ounces) will keep your heart and cardio system in tip top shape. In fact, a recent study found that individuals who have had a heart attack and eat chocolate had a 44% greater ten year survival rate than those patients who did NOT eat chocolate.
If you think about it, it makes total sense! Chocolate is made from plants which means it contains a lot of the same vitamins and minerals of dark vegetables. Chocolate is a complex nutrient with over 300 compounds and chemicals in every bite. High in flavonoids and antioxidants cocoa contains 8 times the number found in strawberries, green tea or red wine (sorry Alchy’s). Antioxidants fight aging by attacking free radicals that have been linked to heart disease, cancer and wrinkles. Flavonoids relax blood pressure through the production of nitric oxide and balance hormones in the body. Interestingly, research also shows that washing your chocolate down with a glass of milk could prevent the antioxidants from being absorbed into your system. In other words be a purest.
Phew, chocolate is not so naughty after all. Enjoy!
