Everyone seems to be catching the flu this season and avoiding it has become a top priority. Seniors, new moms, and kids are at an especially high risk for catching the dreaded flu. So what can you do?
Robert and Annette Mahoney, health care experts associated with FirstLight HomeCare, specialize in providing in-home care for seniors, new moms, and people who cannot currently take care of themselves. They understand that no one has time to get sick so they have provided 5 uncommon tips to aid in flu prevention.
1. A Spoonful of Coconut Oil
Coconut oil smells like a tropical oasis, but it also packs properties that increase your immune defense. The lauric acid in it converts to monolaurin, fighting overtime to defend your body. You can easily stir a spoonful of coconut oil into your regular coffee or tea!
2. Drink Warm Tea
Tea can boost immunity and aid in flu and cold prevention. According to a Harvard study, drinking green or black tea daily, several times a day, can make you 10 times less likely to catch the flu. Tea can also help wash viruses from your throat and once the germs are in your stomach, they can’t survive.
3. Experiment with Garlic
Garlic contains allicin which has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Just make sure the garlic is raw. You can even add garlic at the end of cooking to tap its full medicinal power.
4. Don’t Just Wash, Use Lotion
Washing your hands is essential to keeping germs at bay, but it is also important to regularly hydrate your skin with lotion. When your skin cracks, germs can become trapped in them, increasing your chances of getting the flu. Try an antibacterial or hand soap with lotion instead!
5. Try Lemon
Lemons are not only packed with vitamin C, which is known to support the body’s natural defenses, but it can also help build resistance to the flu. Dr. Oz suggests adding lemon juice to your tea or make lemonade to build resistance or speed up healing if you do succumb to the flu.
I hope you find these flu prevention tips helpful! Good luck!
