Researchers have blessed us with a very grown up way to get our daily antioxidants. Cabernet Sauvignon followed by petite syrah and pinot noir have the highest concentration of flavonids (an important antiox must), which have been shown to help prevent some cancers and heart disease, while also reducing inflammations caused by arthritis. Revesterol another antiox fav found in red wine grape skins might inhibit tumor development in some cancers as well as help treat Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases. Another study found that women who drink a glass or two of wine daily have 5 to 8 percent denser bones, preventing injuries.
Of course, no one is promoting excessive drinking which leads to weight gain, addiction, and a rise in LDL cholesterol.
Moderation is the key. One to two four ounce glasses is the suggested daily. Fun is the prescription. I have found the best place to test out your new found wine drinking freedom. My friends, the Roosters, are having their annual Food and Wine celebration May 22 and 23 at Newport Beach Fairmont Hotel. Over 20 wineries will feature their finest bottles and 18 of Orange County’s top chefs will be preparing a 5-course meal. For more information go to http://www.roostersfoundation.org
The Roosters is a charity and social organization in the greater Orange County area of Southern California. Each year they raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for disadvantaged children. This year they will feed 5,000 families with needy and at-risk children representing 40,000 people living below the poverty line in Orange County.
